Eyesore & The Jinx and the acerbic truth laden post punk gut punches of "Do What You Love"

"you gotta reach for new lows to do what you love..."

The anti-static bass moves, drum shuffles, razor sharp guitar shapes and strident vox of "Do What You Love" by Liverpool’s post punk trio Eyesore & The Jinx conjure up a mix of imagery in my head like Wire (circa 1979), Swell Maps (1980) and Monty Python's Ministry of Silly Walks (circa 1970). It could be the band's acerbic glasses that they view the world through. It could be the truth within their lyrical content full of gut punches and social commentary and God's cosmic jokes, you know like the death of 4 million people in the 1931 China floods and Donald Trump becoming President of the United States.

"'Do what you love' is a song about the age-old bullshit phrase, "if you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life." Having been adopted by companies of all sizes in recent years, this phrase has become the motto of late capitalism's nadir, where our jobs continue to swallow our personal lives whole." says Josh Miller - (Eyesore & The Jinx)

I come from a generation that bought the big lie about working oneself to death for a big fat pension that doesn't materialize. Young people are wising up to the systematic con job that is structures against the masses by the rarefied 1 percent.

I am crossing my fingers that all people are wising up.

From press notes:

[Eyesore songs often consist of ugly narratives centred around vile fictional characters. They take loose inspiration from what is happening around them, which has meant that in some cases, their made up stories have come true. Predicting the downfall of local public figures aside, their repertoire often centres around the worst of society (the eyesore), but with a playful side (the jinx). This continues through the new material they’re set to share in 2023, alongside a healthy dollop of self-reflection.]

Eyesore & The Jinx’s early singles and debut EP were released by Merseyside taste-makers Eggy Records. Eyesore’s sphere of influence began to expand out of their home region, starting with a BBC 6Music Roundtable win for ‘On An Island’ produced by Jonathan Hartley from iconic psych-surgeons Clinc. Their debut EP, featuring singles ‘Leisure Time’ (KEXP Song of the Day) and ‘Nightlife’ was recorded with Daniel Fox (Gilla Band). The EP was funded by PRS Foundation’s PPL Momentum Accelerator fund for Liverpool musicians and was pressed to vinyl thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign.

After releasing their EP in the midst of the pandemic, they spent the latter end of 2021 and much of 2022 writing new material and tightening it up on stage with some choice gigs supporting acts like Bodega, Working Mens Club and DITZ. While the band stepped away from releasing music to continue songwriting and demoing, previous single ‘Leisure Time’ carried on picking up support behind their backs appearing on an episode of Shameless US and then somehow managing to appear in a number of Spotify editorial playlists at the end of 2022.

2023 feels like a fresh start for the band, with lots of recorded music under their belts there’s certainly an album announcement just round the corner.
