Graham Grease and the impalpable post punk tension of "On Replay"

"rely on stolen time, rely on stolen time..."

For something to sound heavy you have to be able to feel the emptiness. I thought about this while getting lost in the big strident wails and sonic walls of "On Replay" from Washington DC's Graham Grease. While there is droning ambience and screaming droning guitar notes creating an impalpable tension for gritty vocal bloodletting to stick to, there are also moments when you feel an emotional aloneness and then you feel hints, remembrances of nothingness. The tension is thick and fleshy, the bass sound feels unbelievably sinewy (I thought of Jesse F. Keeler), the guitar layers feel angst ridden, the vocals that can get a bit lost heightens the sense of despair and brazen survivorship.

 From press notey stuff:

“On Replay” from Washington DC’s Graham Grease captures the excitement of wall-of-sound post-punk reminiscent of the founding groups of the genre’s signature sound. Speaking to the loss of the human element that comes with the modern music methods of today, the song was recorded during the pandemic at the band’s small home studio ( Cutman Studios), with Spike Smith of Killing Joke and Morrissey performing and recording percussion abroad. It was mixed by Jonathan Schenke (Parquet Courts, Liars, Snail Mail, the Drums) in NYC at Studio Windows.

Washington, DC

Consisting of guitarist Jack Hiltabidle, bassist Terrence Carson, and drummer Zeeshan Shad, DC’s Graham Grease was formed in 2019. Since then, they have recorded a full length record, have a second one in the wings, and have another in the works.

Graham Grease’s DIY sound and impassioned lyrics have a clear history but still create something distinctly their own. Their album Virtues, Boxes, and Signs was recorded at Wall of Sound Studio in Chicago by Luke Otwell, mixed by Bryce Goggins at Trout Recording in Brooklyn, and released by Editoris Records based in Panama City, Panama.
