j.paul and Jwalttz and the bedroom pop shine of "Versace"

 

"I'm just stuck up on you and I'm not really sure what to do..."

I don't know how j.paul and Jwalttz met but I am guessing they were walking along a New Jersey shoreline, one holding a chocolate bar and one holding an open jar of peanut butter. Each enjoying their sweet confectionary treats, they collide and not only invent Reese's but start making music together. Their collective revealed to me on "Versace" is wonderfully bare, a perfectly produced blend of pearly guitars, doo wop rhythms, symphonic illusions expressed by synths meant to sound like synths, a chill beat and beautifully drawn vocals for the love sick among us. 

 "Versace" works because of the measured sound that purposely plays in that lo-fi bedroom pop sound, elevating it. You also feel nods to surf rock, doo wop punk and even boy band expressions as a cross generational hug from the 50's to the 90's and even to the revivalism of those genres taking place in the aughts. Like an amalgam of Mack DeMarco, The Drums, Her's.
