"Moon so high / Guide my low / Into the night / Here we go, again..."
In my other life, well before my musical one I was a bonafide surf rat. Even though the high school I attended stood 18 miles from the nearest surf spot, I would manage to thrash on some waves before first period. My classmates would have to put up with my matted curly hair that smelled of Southern, California salt water. Those moments are forever ingrained in my being, that persona and all.
I thought of those times when listening to the psychedelic atmospheres of "Möönlight" by Sons Of Zöku, an Adelaide-based hybrid collective of Portuguese-born Ricardo Da Silva and Ica Quintela, and Australian-born Jordan Buck, Oscar Ellery, Eddie Hannemann, and Hannah Yates. The psych jam band aspects lead by a full breathy flute made me think of glassy waves and soundtracks to classic surf movies like the early 70's Five Summer Stories. For me there is a nucleic acid attachment of desert rock to surf rock and I hear both elements in "Möönlight - from the Andalusian toned guitar fanning, the synergy of world music, of zen and jam within the same breath.
Digging the vibes here, squint your eyes at the sun through the trees and listen to Sons Of Zöku, you may see visions of birth, life on high and death all in the matter of minutes. The connectivity of nature and our artistic being.
