Neta Polturak and the torn and tattered power of "Jane" (Kiss of Shame)

Listening to the amber cast, memoric tones of "Jane" by Berlin / Tel Aviv based singer-songwriter, musician, artist Neta Polturak, from her recently released debut solo album "Every Magic Has Its Cost", and I feel instantly pulled into another time and space. There is something about the amazing shuffling drum beat, the pearly airy guitars, droning sounds, enveloping bass lines and Neta's compelling vocal countenance, sultry, thoughtful, emotionally vast, that feels so personal yet so cinematic. Sonically, stylistically, I can't help but think of an amalgam of artists like The Pretenders, Concrete Blonde, Lou Reed.

I love where my head goes while I listen to "Jane" and like nostalgic memories of my youth it feels steeped in all the complex emotions that one's post adolescence entails, a sense of discover, regret, broken heartbreak, being terrified while feeling immortal too.

a sign that I passed held your name
it told me don't save her again
you told me my dreams are to blame
you're tamed to the ground
with your chains
the moon now will laugh from her game

the stars wont be calling her name..." 

The lyrics with a patina of pathos feel like they might have to do with a loved one who might not want to be saved from something or themselves (or maybe I am misreading). One thing is for sure, I love this song and the sound of it.
