Powersolo and the subversive hybrid punk rock beauty of "She's a Trucker"

"she's a trucker / a bad muther trucker..."

Sometimes a brand new song feels like an ice cold splash of water in your face. This is the case with "She's a Trucker" by wonderfully weirdo rocker stalwarts POWERSOLO formed in 1996 in Aarhus, Denmark by vocalist / guitarist Kim “Kix” Jeppesen. Besides the sting on your face, it might also feel like the crazy sideways sounds coming out of your uncle's basement, you know, the one that is a little hyper, has a constant grin like he is going to do 12 mischievous acts after you leave. One of those 'from a distant planet' kinds of people, wildly creative, out of the box, all ID and all life affirming.

The brilliance of "She's a Trucker" cannot be overstated. When I first heard it I thought almost instantly of a cross-polinating amalgam of  bands like Butthole Surfers, Yawn, Batmobile, The Fuzztones (just to name a few). The mix of psychedelia filtered through a prism of weird comics, tightly wound musicality, both wonderfully odd and ethereal at the same time feels artfully subversive but is actually mind bendingly beautiful. POWERSOLO's sound (as press notey stuff reveal) is "termed by the band as “Donkey Punk”- characterized by an often frantic and raucous blend of Garage, Punk, Psychobilly, Surf, and World Music" is the kind of everything goes kind of art that probably stems Jeppesen's lack of fear, lack of appearing foolish or anything really. In that sense it feels pure instead of contrived.

From Press notes:

[POWERSOLO is an active group, recording and touring internationally and extensively through Europe and the USA, as-well-as featuring on several soundtracks for TV and film including the american television series True Blood and American Horror Story.
Their sound- termed by the band as “Donkey Punk” is characterized by an often frantic and raucous blend of Garage, Punk, Psychobilly, Surf, and World Music. This patois leans heavily on a Blues-based rock sound which is recorded often with what could be called utilitarian, obscure, or often primitive instruments and tech. This loans a very authentic-sounding vintage aesthetic to their recordings.
POWERSOLO’s live shows often leave even the most seasoned of show goers bewildered and confused, but always entertained by their quirky, rude, and silly-yet-threatening stage antics- if not by the simple raw power that this group delivers to the crowd at every performance.]

POWERSOLO brings together a distinctively widespread mix of genres centered around an aforementioned mix of Garage, Punk, Rockabilly, Psychobilly, Surf, Psychedelic, Acid Rock, Blues, Country and frankly an objective list of others as well. Never a band to be put into one box, these influences bounce back-and-forth on every record, displaying the groups versatility, whilst still always carrying a retro-rock vibe to all of their compositions.
