"Kicking rocks and climbing trees / More good than bad shared between you and me / Getting yelled at by my mom / Feeling bad I hurt my pa..."
The indie rock twang and laid back amble of "Spilled Coffee" by Carbondale, Colorado's Guantanamo Bay Surf Club feels a bit like porch blues twisted out of sweet tea with a shot of bourbon, a slice of lemon, beach goth, surf punk and psychedelia all stirred in to varying degrees. The beautifully engaging sway highlighted by spacey guitar embellishments also hinges heavily on bassist Matthew Palomino's vocal countenance that chews the scenery in his own special way. Hard to describe, maybe a blended amalgam of John Prine, Don Henley and Kinky Friedman (or not), Palomino's voice is perfect for the rustic poetry he sings and I love how chord shapes surprise from time to time, "Well babe I ain't gonna sweat / Over spilled coffee and burnt cigarettes...".
"Spilled Coffee" is track two from the band's "Something to Sip On" EP, out now.
