Lead Pony and the funky psychedelic buffalo of "Vultures"

"Curls in your hair, Blood on the pavement, Cats in the foyer / Vultures in the city..."

There is so much textured, sinewy sonics to chew on within the meaty soundscape of "Vultures" by San Diego psych / blues rock group Lead Pony that you will likely vibe, dance, voice the words and afterwards gleefully pick the flesh of the song out of your teeth. Things like the retro organ drops, the raw, rough and ready lead vocal countenance, the psychedelic sort of vibratone guitar shapes (and lush leads), the shuffling beat, the amazing (fucking amazing) snappy bass push and the dozen other artful sonic surprises (bells, yelps, and lovely bits of raucous abandon).

The storytelling, words spat out, gritty, soulful could be interpreted in so many ways, some dark, some comedic. As the saying goes “There are eight million stories in the naked city, and this is just one of them" right? Like the lyric, "Yeah you moved into the city, you shaved your head and bought a wig / Now, now we're different people, but I still love you like I did...", that bends in your brain and forms a question mark. You get the distinct sense here that the most interesting stuff might of been edited out. But what we all have to see, hear, is so interesting and alluringly vague that, ultimately, "Vultures" sounds just like a theme song for a Netflix / Hulu binger.

Lead Pony is a California Rock & Roll band. Formed in 2016, Jesse Hofstee, Hillary Laughery and Dylan Stallard started writing songs, recording and playing together with no purpose aside of blind ambition and the search for new feeling. In late 2021, the desire to make a full length record surfaced, and writing shifted into overdrive. After bassist Seancarlo Ohlin joined and during the summer of 2022, the band marooned at Way Out studios in Washington and put it all to tape. Look out for the debut full length in early 2023.
