Artist Running Club and the endearing indie rock day dreams of "Bloomfield"

"I wanna taste what it's like to be free / spend my days sailing the sea..."

Remember those 80's sitcoms, Perfect Strangers comes to mind centered around Wisconsin native Larry Appleton who moves to Chicago and ends up sharing his apartment with Balki Bartokomous, an unknown cousin from the fictional Mediterranean island of Mypos and, well you guessed it, hilarity ensues. 80's sitcoms were decidedly corny, even downright dumb but the emphasis was, in the end, that kind of pals for life mentality and that sentimentality works, easily pulls on your heartstrings because who among us have real intimate friendships that span for years and years.

I thought about this while listening to the endearing, even heartwarming "Bloomfield" by Artist Running Club, I mean it is dripping in the earnest love and hope of fulfillment beyond shiny cars and other baubles. Maybe because the seeds of this cool track are auto-biographical. Singer-songwriters / multi-instrumentalists Sam and Stevie actually, no lie, met in kindergarten and have been together ever since as friends and creators.

From press notes:

[“We wanted to write and record our own songs like bands we admired but being just kids without money, we had to be resourceful”.

They used a family camcorder to capture their first tracks and posted them on MySpace. Met with an encouraging response, they began their now 20-year journey into DIY music production.

The boys have launched numerous projects over the years, most notably the psychedelic indie group Young Monks. This saw them sign with major record label Unified Music Group, and tour their debut record nationally.

Now, after a long hiatus and the ceasing of Young Monks, the boys return with their latest musical trip Artist Running Club. An entirely DIY indie project, brimming with luscious vocal harmonies, wavy guitars, groovy beats and as always, quirky sound design.

They are set to release their first full-length record in 2023.]

I am digging the urgent sounds, the indie pop textures that float between complex interwoven folk and indie rock that gleefully shifts into deep arpeggio'd orchestrations with musical breaks that could even be from a sitcom theme song. Really.
