Rohith Shaker and the crystalline emotional swells of "Lake Misery"

"with every heartbreak comes a memory / and a story drenched in irony / this morning / I had an epiphany / I'm not the same / not what I used to be..."

"Lake Misery" might be an elevated place. As created by Rohith Shaker, the Arizona based recording project by Rohith Chandrashaker, every emotion there, the tranquility, longing, pitched lushness, and veiled beauty is heightened by a sort of late 70's persona when pop wasn't afraid to be artfully stylized and tenderly romantic. Now, I fully accept that my focus on that era might be only on account of my age and that someone younger might find the sounds from other times (or places) but I will stick with that feeling.

Chandrashaker does imbue the track with a poignant croon and crystalline guitar shapes. The drum style against bending arpeggio'd synths, an ambling somber bass, interesting lead guitar drops and that soaring mellotron-esque orchestrated chorus does push buttons in my head, the ghosts of Richard Perry producing Carly Simon, of Gus Dudgeon producing Elton John. Chandrashaker finishes the track out with those gorgeous mellotron tones and over-modulated tubular guitar sounds as birds tweet in the distance.

"As I lay in my bed / Oh I heard what you said / In a distant dream / That played like a movie scene / I struggle to see / What I could be /
Because this glass of mine is chipped / I cannot see / I can't clear out / All of our doubt / But let's leave lake misery / There's more left for us to see / We can talk now / Turn around now / And get off lake misery / I know where I need to be..."

Liner notes reveal:

[Lake Misery" was created in May 2020, born from a poignant yearning for the moments that were slipping away. Against the backdrop of the pandemic and the shift from youth to adulthood, the song strives to savor the remaining fragments of life before they vanish. While the track delves into the intricacies of a romantic relationship, it also touches on concepts of impermanence and transience. With influences drawn from indie rock and shoegaze, "Lake Misery" delivers an ethereal yet tangible experience, submerging the listener in layers of distortion, chorus, and reverb.]

Yeah, I fucking love my time on "Lake Misery".
