"A quarter affection / Three quarters destruction / It's the perfect equation for the mess we make / I wanna deserve it / To be this perfect / But I just can't be half this fake..."
"Yin Yang" by The Netherlands' artist Swan, accompanied with a gorgeous Official Video (as directed by Morena Schwarzwälder & Puck van Diepen) is a stunning debut. The track penned and produced by Swan and Perquisite highlights an assured sublime aesthetic and a vocal countenance that is a 'perfect combination' of soul pop vulnerability and adult contemporary sass and empowerment. In terms of the musical frames and emotional button pushing there is a sense of light jazz, alt pop (and hints of baroque pop), indie pop and R&B and in a real way, stylistically, I am feeling faint ghosts of Fiona Apple, Kate Bush, FKA twigs within Swan's and Perquisite's totally original imaginings.
The shapes in "Yin Yang" surprise and the musical maze the song takes delivers in a big, big way (again, I am gobsmacked that this is a debut single). I am loving the yin yang approach to the songwriting and this particular passage sticks in my head:
"A quarter affection
Three quarters destruction
It's the perfect equation for the mess we make
I wanna deserve it
To be this perfect
But I just can't be half this fake"
Three quarters destruction
It's the perfect equation for the mess we make
I wanna deserve it
To be this perfect
But I just can't be half this fake"
I don't know why but it does as does the chorus and everything really. Swan promises an EP soon.

Swan sets herself apart with a blunt yet poetic songwriting style with honest vocals and sophisticated harmonies supported by groovy productions. She encourages her listeners to step into their higher selves and face their emotions head on, perceiving their vulnerability as a strength. After fully focusing on her musical growth the last couple of years, Swan is ready to seize the new year. Her debut EP, that she produces together with Perquisite, is planned to be released in the second half of 2023 and revolves around trying to find the balance between loving others and loving herself.
