YATWA and the indie rock / power pop shiny darkness of "Easier" (Official Video)

"you're called a worthless piece of shit / as they kick your shins and stoop you down for good / but it's not who you are...."

I had a boss who is a massive hulk of a man. He spoke in a southern accent even though he was raised in Ohio and in that southern drawl he used to say, "Don't piss on my boots and tell me it's raining." I don't know why I am bringing that up but it seems to be somehow appropriate when speaking about the salty and sweet "Easier" by the Viennese band YATWA (formerly known as You and the Whose Armies. Sweet because the track has an invigorating, righteously upbeat jag of a progression (I thought of a collision of Yuck and The Drums) but salty because the strident politico punk vocal aesthetic kicks in early, "you're called a worthless piece of shit / as they kick your shins and stoop you down for good..." and the downturned vibe that life is hard and getting harder, that optimism is hard to muster up when societies put systems in place that feel like obstacles. That someone is fucking with us all.

From press notes:

YATWA dedicate a hymn with the simple title "Easier" to this divergence between fair-weather feeling (music) and anxious hopes for the future (lyrics). Musically, the band drifts even further into New Wave a la Blondie and the like with their second single of the year, without wanting to pander to the associated vibe…

Digging the urgent emotional weight juxtaposed against interwoven power pop sunshine. It makes both opposing elements seem more impactful. In the end (and resolving on positive words) "Easier" feels like a song for fighters and survivors.

The Viennese band formerly known as "You and the Whose Armies" is now called YATWA. The name change goes hand in hand with a new sound. While the debut album KATAUNA KATA (Nov. 2021) was still characterised by uncompromising "regressive rock", the new single "Parallel Lines" is more reduced and shows New Wave influences. This change of style is certainly also due to the collaboration with producer Mario Fartacek (Mynth, Good Wilson etc.). With the formula "Welcome to Adulthood", singer Valentin Seißler welcomes the listeners to the journey on "Parallel Lines". It starts off laid back, only picks up speed in the second part and leads you through the abyss of an acid trip in the upbeat. “Parallel Lines” are actually three songs in one. And that with a playing time of less than three minutes. The individual parts don't seem to be thrown together, but rather fit into a coherent, strange earworm.
