Lead Pony and the cracked mirror of "Strangers" (Official Video)

"Dancing on the travertine, beautiful displays of innocents / Oh the knife fight in the hallway light should have stole my gaze but it didn't..."

There is something about the sprite, bright, beautiful picked guitar progression of "Stranger" by San Diego's Lead Pony that feels like memories flashing by at a breakneck pace. Pumped up and even pushed along by the dreamy bass and drums and droning lead guitar lines gives the sonic imagery a sense that time is fleeting by even faster. I am thoroughly digging Jesse Hofstee's vocal countenance that in some odd and beautiful way made me think of a collision of Tom Verlaine (Television) and Peter Case (The Plimsouls). He is able to express sadness as a somber reflection to be dealt with instead of a depressive grip. Hofstee's stomach ache here and the punch in ours will be ok in the end.

Still, the lyrics, darkly poetic and pristine in their beauty are stand on their own on the page and encased in Lead Pony's song are only elevated, gaining emotional gravitas.

"Dancing on the travertine, beautiful displays of innocents / Oh the knife fight in the hallway light should have stole my gaze but it didn't / So many nights I drove alone trying to find myself in a tune / So many times running out of lines to say to strangers and family to /

Life's a party but keep it down / Life of the party don't let the strangers down..."

Discussing the track, vocalist/guitarist Jesse Hofstee shares, “'Strangers has been floating around for a while but was rewritten and took on a new life during our recording sessions with Trevor Spencer. It describes a wild night at a party, with the chorus, 'Life’s a party’, sung with more melancholy than celebration. It’s about the human disconnect that social media has facilitated, the pressures that come along with it, and the false representation that it often can portray. You could post a picture of yourself looking like you’re having the time of your life at a party but in reality you could be drinking alone. It's a party song for the strangers."

"Strangers" is from Lead Pony's debut album 'Vultures' out July 14th.
