Nora Kelly Band and the plaintive campfire song of "Roswell" (Official Video)

"A stargazer told me, only cause I asked / He’d seen a thousand UFOs in the past / But he reassured me they’d all been explained / And this had me depressed for many days..."

Listening to the beautiful, plaintive  lament of "Roswell" by the Nora Kelly Band and I can't help but imagine this song being sung in the middle of the high desert with an audience of sundry creatures. raccoons, stellar jays, coyotes, mountain lions, deer, brown bear, other known varmints as well as moving lights in the sky. This Montreal quintet's western sound is a much needed band aid to the open would left by festering bro country and pop country.

A lot of indie rock bands are going this way or maybe have always been, you know, blending in country, folk and western in a real way. I like it a lot especially since the state of so called country music has been in the toilet since real country and outlaw country has ridden off into the sunset. Nora's vocal lilt, vulnerable, self aware and comforting in it's touched melancholia, is gorgeous.

"Roswell" from Nora Kelly Band's upcoming full length "Rodeo Clown" (that drops August 25th via Mint Record) is accompanied with a great Official Video.

[A stargazer told me, only cause I asked / He’d seen a thousand UFOs in the past / But he reassured me they’d all been explained /
And this had me depressed for many days /

The moon at noon and the forest desert / Strange sights on the way to Roswell / The petroglyphs and the cactus army / Strange sights coming back to haunt me /

Some men, all they want is a beauty queen / A woman to support them in all of their dreams / But give me a call when the going gets less clear / At the end of your life you remember what’s weird /

The moon at noon and the forest desert / Strange sights on the way to Roswell / The petroglyphs and the cactus army / Strange sights coming back to haunt me ]

The Nora Kelly Band was born of friends jamming by the train tracks of Montreal’s Mile End neighbourhood. People flocked to listen and sing along -- until the cops chased them off. The group’s twist on alt-country delivers haunting harmonies, rambunctious twang and wry lyrics -- the perfect backdrop for your next tussle in the hay. Before COVID, Kelly led the post-punk band DISHPIT, whose album with Steve Albini drew praise across North America and the UK. But when the pandemic switched things up, so did Nora. She looked inward, asked some hard questions and turned to rock’s roots. Out poured tunes about love, independence and climbing back in the saddle when self-doubt bucks you off. Nora Kelly Band, have returned with their new single, “Lay Down Girl,” and announced their debut album, Rodeo Clown, which arrives August 25 via Mint Records. Rodeo Clown was written by Nora Kelly, produced by Kelly with Ethan Soil, and mixed by Pietro Amato (The Luyas/Belle Orchestre).
