"the mercurial shapes here, tonally, emotionally, bending genres right before they snap, feels life affirming..."
At one minute and thirty five seconds into "The State of Things" (by Asheville, NC based prog rock, psychedelic jazz dipped Papadosio) something happens that amped up my brain and felt like a rich dreamy amalgamation of Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side of The Moon" / (1973) Emerson, Lake and Palmers' 1972 "Trilogy" album and Edgar Winter Group "They Only Come Out At Night" (72). The stunning passage, mind you, might be the first dip into progressive rock, a sensation of thing to come but, prior to that, the track sounds pretty chill, jazzy, mellow. like a 80's sitcom or acerbic NYC cop drama (Hill Street Blues comes to mind) so the fact that the song gets beautifully, dramatically psychedelic and transitions styles so effortlessly is pretty amazing. There is also this vocal thing happening, or rather non-lexical vocal thing happening (I think) that ramps up the mood, the mystery making things sound doubly unique.
Papadosio has been around for 16 years and it shows in the musical structures, the tight musical narratives that literally take you on a journey that is both surprising and stunningly vast. Oh and the drumming... don't get me started. Anyway, the mercurial shapes here, tonally, emotionally, bending genres right before they snap, feels life affirming.
Love this.
