Aistis and the darkly drawn poignant portrait of "The Profile" (Official Video)

 

"digging for answers / missing the mark / romanticizing bad habits / pretending it's art..."


There are beautiful piano elements and orchestrations in the acerbically, dark and self deprecating stunner, "The Profile", by Montreal based musician, songwriter, and producer Aistis that reminded me of 70's circa Elton John but the narrative is less Bernie Taupin and more like an amalgam of Harry Nilsson, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Kurt Vonnegut. The sense here, enhanced by biting lyrics and emotionally stirring vocal melodies, is a total lack of self awareness, of empathy turned inside out coming off as a sad and poignant portrait of someone who will likely die alone and not really care. 

All this darkness is saturated in a thick, heavy patina of melancholia, so much so that you feel sorry for the song's subject matter, the character who doesn't possess any mirrors. One of the beautifully drawn thematic set pieces is this character describing himself to a fault and ending on what feels like an incendiary punch line. It is both heartbreaking and exquisitely funny. It kind of comes across like a descriptor on a dating app. 

a man with good fashion / who struggles to find / bodies worth devoting most of his time / a frequent indulger / yeah, I'm a steadfast drunk fiend / frightened by commitment / other people, and me / 

a life contradiction / who takes pride in that? / filling every void burning roses and masks / a born entertainer that's hard to impress / this lovable puppy when lying in bed / an avid consumers of things I claim to hate / I'm inspired by my lack of great inspiration / I promise to attempt to be your best companion / 

a sore loser who will cheat here and there just to win / I'm dwelling in nostalgia and the things I once had / I've hardly ever known present, only future and past
