"Skylarking" by Seattle, Washington's Colorworks is the kind of translucent ascending psychedelic rock song the brings me back to another life when I used to surf long lines at the Power Plant powering out radical off the lips and then gliding so serenely that I could just cry. That was many, many moons ago before I had responsibilities and shifted from surf rat to musician. You might see something else while you listen to this beautiful, beautifully punchy song but you will see something life affirming.
Cofounder / lead vocalist and guitarist Bret Dylan wrote "Skylarking" from a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean during a summer road trip to Southern California in 2020. Bret with bassist / vocalist Kailen Swensen, keyboardist / vocalist Asher Einhorn and drummer Deno Durant conceive a dreamy vision of flying across and over the surf and against those cliffs. I absolutely love the keys that feel like a dirty Fender Rhodes, the huge bass and stomping drums. The song has a decidedly live sound, it tugs at me like late 70's garden rock colliding with 90's indie rock. The lead guitar work rides on swells of sound and the passionate vocal sweep against what feels like slightly dissonant synths have tension and when the falsetto sweeps in and the song breaks down to sparse essentials and builds up, swells with layers of sonics, I see those fucking waves at my feet and I feel complete and maybe a little sad that those days are gone.
