"before I leave / I just wanna give / one overwhelming thundering resolving sound..."
Why do we like any particular songs? The answers are many, too many to mention but oftentimes for me, it is because the song makes me feel a bit unsteady on my feet, surprising me and sometimes it is purely the connection with the untethered voice. I always appreciate interesting voices with actors too.
As I listen to "Resolving Sound" by Christchurch, New Zealand's Little Fang (and from their upcoming "Going Nowhere Faster" EP) I am hooked in by the vocal countenance first and foremost. The muscularity of it, the sort of drunken swagger that sort of seems less sung and more stated, maybe like a mix of Paul Banks and Faris Badwan (from Interpol and The Horrors respectively) seems self aware and self assured.
Of course, though, it is not only the voice but what fuels and frames it. Instantly the song sounds vastly dreamy and darkly drawn, the droning guitar dissonance throughout that feels sort of Pixies like and the beautifully on point drumming and big bass assault creates a throttling haze. And, of course, those eruptive wall of guitars sounds that I suspect are layers of power chords and open ones. The distortions, emotionally and sonically, are fucking lovely.
