Maida Rose and the beautiful melancholia of "Phoenix" (Official Lyric Video)

"thought this year would be different / but here I am again / life has caught up with me / and I don't know where the time went..."

Listening to the dream swept "Phoenix" by The Hague, The Netherlands dream pop duo Maida Rose (comprised of songwriters Javièr den Leeuw and Roos Meijer) and you will feel embraced. Deep in your brain there might be faint signals, transmissions of artists like Beach House but Maida Rose strips away the haze, pushes through the fog and what might feel like past remembrances when obscured by shoegaze tendency feels more immediate in this kind of clarity. In this way, and of course there are many more differences, Den Leeuw and Meijer as dual voices cozy up right to our ears, the feeling is so intimate. In this way their sound might feel more like bedroom pop than classic dream pop and I love that.

I have written a few times before about Roos Meijer as a solo artist and have been exquisitely impressed with her as a songwriter and vocalist but with Den Leeuw as Maida Rose, the pair feel like something meant to be and a greater artistic whole than separate.

"now I've confined myself to crawl / like I'm a broken wing on hold / withdrawn on wondering how the wind blows / to unfold my own myth..."

[‘Phoenix’ is the first Maida Rose release since their debutalbum ‘Tales Of Adolescence’ in 2022. The song is part of their upcoming EP ‘Philia’, which celebrates the 10th anniversary of the friendship between its songwriters Javièr den Leeuw and Roos Meijer.

‘Phoenix’ takes you on a journey of introspection. Inspired by poems of the Persian poet Rumi, the duo explores the challenges of taking responsibility for your own life and rising up after an emotionally challenging period. Dreamy as ever, though more mature than their previous work, Maida Rose remains a treat for all lovers of slow indie songs.]

Dream on .
