The War Toys and heavy garage punk mirror of "Little Gallows"

 

"on a sad street of a hot beat / digging air real deep / and the shadow little gallows / come and reap what you sow..."

Call it revival rock or doo wop punk or surf punk or garage rock or an amalgam of all those sub genres, you know this sound when you hear it, feel it. It seems quintessentially Californian to me, maybe springing up like weeds through LA beaches, or hell, maybe that is just my myopic view being basically a life long Californian via The Netherlands. Anyway, this sound is a popular one obviously but for me some bands don't get it right (sorry) but listening to "Little Gallows" by Los Angeles based The War Toys and you quickly know that they do, not only get it right but get it purely subversive like it should be while feeling purely emotional too mining the darkness with a shiny flashlight. 

I love everything about this track crafted and rendered by Collin Deatherage on lead vocals / guitar, Thomas Rojo on bass, and Jordan Palmer on drums. From press notes: "Little Gallows aims to invoke images of freedom, addiction, and regret. Through the soft sultry tones, The War Toys deliver a story of addiction from the outside perspective" and they drive the discourse, the personal reflections with pile driving guitar sounds, a slapping surf beat and scowling vox.
