"do you feel the same / or is this me?"
The vast untamed sound of "Now You Know" by Peli Gene, the musical moniker of Tampa, Florida's solo artist Gabe Parker, feels particularly youthful, those critical unforgiving times when you feel most invincible and fraglie within the same breath. This track jams in such a furious way but against the barrage of unstoppable drums and bass lines, there are such pretty sonics too, a blend of opposites and Parker's vocals somewhere between a croon and wail. I always feel like songs exist at the end of a million falling sonic dominoes, touchstones of sounds and artists affecting glorious outcomes, some that you don't even realize in a conscious way. When it comes to "Now You Know" and Peli Gene it feels like a cross generational collision of Cocteau Twins' beautiful crystal sadness (circa 1986) and Surf Curse's (circa 2013) rabid emotional implosions (Sea, Swallow Me and Freaks came to mind). You may here other tenuous connections.
"Now You Know", the first of three releases leading up to Peli Gene's debut album, is on fire conceived and eventually created from whole sonic cloth from his bedroom studio, like all his songs.
"The lyrics convey the speaker's inner struggle as they question whether their feelings are reciprocated, emphasizing the need for communication."
