Almond Milk and the sweet escape of "In Love"

"smoke when I'm down / watch people go by / leaving light trails behind..."

Pretty textured acoustic guitar opens "In Love" by the indie rock, alt pop trio Almond Milk. Soon after upfront, right in your ear, a sweet vocal drops in and then a lovely bass line with harmonies. In under one minute, a staccato guitar, heavier drums and bass drop with what sounds like another vocalist crooning away, the sense feels more glam meets doo wop punk than the aforementioned indie pop rock sound. The musical break like something between a Hawaiian Luau and western pop noir pedal steel is truly beautiful before the song drops back into the glam-esque doo wop punk theatricality.

The song's outro with wang bar bends is equally sweet while pulling in a drunk kind of psychedelia. "In Love" ends up being a total surprise and while I can't really figure out if it is a love song to weed or just a love song between friends, I dig it.

Almond Milk share this about "In Love":

"After a decade our middle school band from Hong Kong got together for a jam on a rainy day in New York, exploring tunes while smoking and what started as a joke soon turned into a full fledged song full of love."

And from Liner notes:

[Almond Milk is the musical three piece of Ollie Rodgers, Ollie Chen and Matt Lau. They met in high school but ended up in separated across the world for university. Originally playing under the band name Chocolate Milk, they grew up into the now Almond Milk during a brief stint in NYC. Their music aims somewhere between The Velvet Underground and Gorillaz but who knows where it lands.]

"In Love" reminds me that songs tug at your heart or brain for inexplicable reasons, or maybe for no reason at all. I guess that is why I like songs so much because the way they slip into your psyche can be a total mystery.
