"my brother once said to me / plenty of fish in the sea..."
Trust fall into Beryl's shape shifting "Bad Joke" and for some reason I am fading back into a specific sense of the mid 90's when pop would experiment feely (before it was called alt pop), when artists and producers were tossing post punk, pop, dance pop, adult contemporary modes in a bowl and mixing. Maybe a byproduct of club mixing on turntables and listening to how those cross pollinating transitions from genre to genre felt.
"Bad Joke" is wildly inventive while feeling so indie rock meets soul pop / funk forward until, that is, the sounds implode in on itself feeling a bit like glitch, acid jazz, and experimental post punk colliding ALL the while pushed along by wonderfully expressive vocals and beautifully curious and comely lyrics.

[Sydney based Beryl have been writing their inventive music since early 2019, when they came together after discovering a mutual love of songwriting.]
[Punchy vocals and percussive textures compliment cynical lyrics on this new track by Sydney based Beryl. Produced with Blain Cunnnen (Julia Jacklin) and featuring the multi-instrumentalist duo on an array of instruments, the track departs from Beryl’s usual art-folk approach, for one that is more influenced by post-punk stylings than folk music. The track will be featured as part of an upcoming LP in November that will follow up on the success of this string of singles.]
I dig it.
