"There’s a good kind of pain / And I carry it with me every day / Makes me think I was born to be brave..."
Sometimes specific moments in history multiply the import of a song a hundred fold. This is what I am feeling listening to the moving "Through The Eyes Of A Woman", by Danish artist, singer-songwriter Lucky Lo, as I absorb the song through my skin, into my soul as I watch the Official Video. Now, this is not to say that this song isn't amazing all by itself, in a societal vacuum, it most certainly is and, in fact, it touched me the first time I heard it several weeks ago but the rise of American fascism and the recent rise of Louisiana legislator Mike Johnson as the GOP's Speaker of The House, makes this song feel exquisitely important.
Johnson is a rabid Christian Nationalist who believes that the American Democracy should be a Theocracy. He believes gays should not be able to marry, is virulently anti LGBTQ, is 100% anti-abortion and believes that every woman in America should be married and give birth for the sole purpose of supplying the nation with it's future, preferably Christian, work force. He speaks about the women in America like chattel. He feels like a real life version of the totalitarian, theonomic government leaders of Gilead, the country portrayed in Margaret Atwood's chilling novel "The Handmaid's Tale", a story that unfortunately seems less fictional each and every day.
[With “Through The Eyes Of Woman”, Lucky Lo encompasses an essential human feeling and right: Freedom. This single is taken from Lucky Lo’s next album The Big Feel, which is produced in collaboration with her band, producer Søren Buhl Lassen, and released on Tambourhinoceros (Brimheim, School of X, Rangleklods and many more). Lo Ersare, aka Lucky Lo, says:
“The abortion issue is a human rights issue, and it’s quite simple: Our body, our choice, our freedom — “we are free to choose to give life or let go”. And until science outruns us, every human being on this planet will be born and nourished by the organ that is inside every biologically born woman — as well as non-binary people.”
“Through The Eyes Of A Woman” sets the frame for a deeply personal yet universal and important narrative, an indie-folk ballad in the lineage of protest song pioneers like Joan Baez and Bob Dylan, and where Lucky Lo, in her own way, puts important human experiences on musical formula.
“With every birth comes pain. And often a good kind, because the pain brings life. But it should be a free choice for the owner of the body whether to go through this pain or not. This made me want to make a song that both celebrates the strength of the female body and at the same time recognizing the pain we are subjected to — both by our own anatomy and also by society”, Lo Ersare explains.
“Through The Eyes Of A Woman” follows the singles “Peak/Valley” and “Hey! Let’s Go”, all of which will be released on the upcoming album The Big feel. Lucky Lo and her band will begin their Danish 2024 tour in Store Vega in Copenhagen on January 12 with her biggest concert to date. Before that Lucky Lo will play her first German headliner tour in November 23 on the back of her showcase at Reeperbahn Festival this September. This marks Lucky Lo as a name with a rising presence — both with fans, and also with solid support from several recognised media such as KEXP, NRK P13, BBC 6, rotation on Swedish Radio P3, Danish P4 and P6 Beat, broad support from Spotify across Europe.]
"Through The Eyes Of A Woman", with it's beautiful orchestrations, grand empathetic gestures and Lucky Lo's rolling thunder vocal aesthetic uttering politico poetry for the ages is so incredibly impactful. It is at once as much a loving embrace as it is a tight fist raised high in the air, a call to arms and to lock arms against powerful forces whose intent is to enslave those of us who they consider to be 'less than'.
"There’s a good kind of pain
And I carry it with me every day
Makes me think I was born to be brave
Born with pain built within
And I assure you I feel every sting
Buds will break and it hurts to bloom and bear fruit
Body, a home
Lucky Lo is the moniker of artist Lo Ersare and Lo's incredibly potent vocal countenance is saturated in both melancholia and empowerment. The stunning power of "Through The Eyes Of A Woman" (from Lo's brand new full length album "The Big Feel" that just dropped yesterday October 27th, 2023) is, at it's core, a stunning anthem of the inherent reproductive rights given to women by the mere virtue of being women and "speaks to the fundamental human message of freedom and the right to decide over one’s own body".
From Liner notes with quotes from Lucky Lo:
“The abortion issue is a human rights issue, and it’s quite simple: Our body, our choice, our freedom — “we are free to choose to give life or let go”. And until science outruns us, every human being on this planet will be born and nourished by the organ that is inside every biologically born woman — as well as non-binary people.”

Lucky Lo unites people through her music by shedding light on the dark side of existence and turning trauma into triumph. With her sincere and colourful alternative pop songs, the music moves within the realm of organic and hand-played sounds with her band and the occasional nod to bigger pop productions. This happens with a cathartic release of energy led by Lo Ersare's unforgettable voice, which, like the themes of her songs, embraces both darkness and light. Lucky Lo's songs contain encounters with great loves, deep sorrows, intoxicating joys and reflections on current movements such as climate, sexual freedom and mental health. Lucky Lo is a born performer who, with her natural empathy and confidence both in the studio and on stage, gives her audience a revitalising dose of life. The music welcomes everyone, young and old, to embrace a collective feeling of belonging and community.
