"Played games again and again / Seduced me, yes I was your fan / That had power, addiction potential / Bad weather, wild flower / Totally mental, mental..."
The super chill and dreamy "Let It Be" brought to us all by Germany's Robert Kretzschmar, drummer for Anna Erhard, Kat Frankie, Masha Qrella, Das Paradies, Albertine Sarges and more, is from his run, his paradiddle as a solo artist and on his just released debut album "Homecoming" which dropped on October 13th (2023).
AS press notes reveal (bracketed):
[Raised in the Thuringian Woodlands and rooted in Berlin for 20 years, Robert writes, plays and produces all the songs himself. Mixed by renowned producer Olaf Opal (The Notwist, International Music), mastered by Norman Nitzsche (The Whitest Boy Alive, Beirut) and finished with string arrangements by Michael Mühlhaus (Blumfeld, Die Türen), his debut tells razor-sharp stories - with a clear sound that would even make Robert Wyatt dream.]
I am loving the chill ride (or via the beautiful Official Video) roll of this track. The percolations of sound that feel like the engine along with the understated but lovely drumming. Robert's vocal aesthetic, gentle with a sort of 60's sense of psychedelia is comforting, beautiful with the foreign vocal lilt adding a certain indefinable spice. In it's totality if feels like a cool pastiche of indie rock, alt pop, twee and psychedelic folk. I dig it and the roller skating dance Official Video.
[Robert Kretzschmar already made a name for himself as a live and studio musician in the German pop and indie landscape. As part of the duo IT'S A MUSICAL, he released several albums and EPs with numerous tours in Europe and Asia. Since 2012, he has also been involved in theatre productions as a composer and musical director, e.g. at Schauspiel Frankfurt, Theater Bonn and Schauspiel Hannover.]
While "Let It Be" feels sunshiny sweet in tone, the lyrical content has a thoughtful darkness that feels hinged on the complex interactions between humans, good and bad. I detect the orbit of sexual allure, of power trips, maybe the toxicity of gas lighting and the desire of healing. This juxtaposition of caustic emotions, of rolling away to survive against a sprite pretty song make it that much daring and interesting.
A force of attraction
Another crazy reaction
In every little constellation
Make me believe I'm not a friend
It doesn't need another translation
That this game must come to an end
In every little situation
What you did to me, to me
No longer of this inspiration
Over now, I let it be
I feel recovery in me
I let it be
I feel recovery in me
I let it be

Robert Kretzschmar, Berlin's favourite drummer for Kat Frankie, Masha Qrella, Das Paradies and Albertine Sarges, among others, dares the long-awaited step into the world of solo musicians and delivers his solo debut this year. Robert's songs fascinate with an unmistakable beauty and take us directly out of our daily routine into an acoustic embrace. His music is characterised by an apparent minimalism, as the sound is big. Mixed by renowned producer Olaf Opal (The Notwist, International Music), mastered by Norman Nitzsche (The Whitest Boy Alive, Beirut) and finished with string arrangements by Michael Mühlhaus (Blumfeld, Die Türen), his debut tells pin-sharp stories – with a clear sound that would even make Robert Wyatt dream.
