Sarah Klang and the glowing melancholy blessings of "Worst Mom" (Official Video)

"I feel like the worst worst mom today / You screamed all night / And you probably gonna cry all day / And I’ll run you a bath / Trying to start all over again..."

Against a lazy Lou Reed-esque bass line, the amazingly catchy, emotionally moving ""Worst Mom" by Gothenburg's Swedish Grammy Award winning Sarah Klang sings about the ultimate blessings and inevitable perceived curses of being a momma. It is part of the human condition and chemical post pregnancy dips that cause mom's to beat themselves up in the worst way. On her upcoming album "Mercedes", dropping October 20thvia Nettwerk, Sarah sang about the blessed, beautiful transformations of being a mother on the albums title track "Mercedes" and the track "Magic Stone" so it feels fitting and bravely honest to look at the other sides.

I feel like the worst mom today
You came out of my body
Every part of it changed
Now everything is hurting
I can’t even walk the same
I can’t fit in my old shoes
Stuck in this sad baby blues

The open wounds here revealed with such candid clarity is amazing. Sarah's vocal countenance, her ability to hold her fragility and lost feelings in every artful syllable is incredibly moving. The final chorus, like a splash of ice cold water feels like an embracing hug and gentle gut punch at the same time especially for all of us who are parents.

I don’t even know where I end and you begin
I don’t even know who I am without you
I don’t even know where I end and you begin
All I know is that I love you

Sarah shares:

“It was important to me to show all the sides of motherhood,” Klang explains. “The good and the bad days.”

Of the video, she told Under The Radar, “It’s a twisted, exaggerated nightmare day as a new mother. It's almost like a parody of the feelings you experience. This is how I could FEEL when I was sleep deprived and my baby had been screaming for three weeks. I also wanted to capture sleepless nights and endless walks. And the great love for your child.”

"Worst Mom" is a moving cathartic indie rock amble running on a sleepy beat, synth orchestrations, twangy guitar and Sarah Klang's both heart breaking and ultra loving beautiful croon.

Sarah Klang has enjoyed plenty of success in her career to date, with three Top 5 albums in her homeland of Sweden, as well as winning the Swedish Grammy for Best Album twice. Yet none of that could prepare her for an entirely different journey. Leaving her twenties behind and becoming a mother with her first child became the catalyst for a new cycle of songs all grounded in personal, but also general shared human experiences.

Today sees Sarah Klang share the first of those new songs as she released her brand new single “Mercedes,” along with its official video, via her new label home of Nettwerk Music Group.

Sarah says, “‘Mercedes’ is a letter to my daughter - this is the song I wrote when I was expecting her. A promise of eternal love. And that I will do my best.”

The “Mercedes” video is just as personal as the song. Directed by Fredrika Eriksson, it compiles homemade footage throughout Sarah’s journey towards motherhood, from pregnancy through a baby shower and eventually beaming smiles from the new family. The grainy definition and washed-out palette of the video also provide an instant nostalgia for the recent past.

Hailing from Gothenburg, Sarah debuted in 2018 with Love In the Milky Way, which won Best Album at the Swedish Grammys, while 2019’s Creamy Blue earned further acclaim with Grammy nomination for Best Album and Best Alternative Pop, as well the European Album of the Year at the IMPALA Awards. While her sound had previously touched upon a mix of influences (‘60 and ‘70s pop, Americana, and an undercurrent of country), 2019’s VIRGO - another Swedish Grammy-winning album - then broadened her scope to include elements of ‘80s synth-pop and ‘90s R&B. Tastemaker praise soon followed, notably from i-D, Rolling Stone and Clash. “Mercedes,” written with her regular collaborator and the track’s producer, Kevin Andersson, starts a new chapter in Sarah’s career, which will continue with further releases as 2023 progresses.
