Slightest Clue and the proper frantic fit of "Suit Uptight!" (Official Lyric Video)

"All this talk about ticking clocks, while all I've got is ticking bombs, so I'll wait / So suit up tight, pull up your socks, maybe take yourself to prom, yeah I'll wait..."

Try on "Suit Uptight!" by Vancouver-based alternative rock band Slightest Clue and you might feel like dancing and maybe primping like a proto-punk peacock. After you get over the audacious lead vocal style tethered to art rock, to glam, to experimental pop, you will notice the sort of mod rock slithering bass lines and the sharp, utterly cool, angular guitar shapes. Depending on your station in life you might think of different other bands that you might imagine as cousins of this sound. I thought of 70's and 80's punk / new wave/ indie rock with a similar sonic D.N.A. as Slightest Clue or vice versa. Iconic bands like Sub Humans, Gang of Four, Wire, Magazine, Pylon, Oingo Boingo, Flamin' Groovies, Talking Heads or more to the point an amalgam of all of these bands.

From Liner Notes (bracketed):

[Charting the emotional highs and lows of a relationship, their new single “Suit Uptight!” grapples with the fear of losing someone.

Produced by Matt Di Pomponio, the thrashing verses represent one’s anxious state of mind in thinking this person might be gone for good. In contrast, the melodic choruses capture the sweet relief of realizing that you may have another shot at working things out.

Each member—Malcolm McLaren, Hannah Kruse, Sean Ries, Nick Sciarretta—brings distinct influences and experiences: a stage actor whose playlists go from Talking Heads to Sonic Youth to Björk, a hook-obsessed recovering choir girl, an electrical engineer whose personal idol is John Bonham, and a guitarist who played for (and left) 10 other bands before deciding this was the one for him. It’s like the secret after-school project of four kids who would have passed each other without a glance in the hallway at school. But once they’re plugged in and ready to play, their distinct blend of post-punk, alternative rock, and dark pop, all bets are off. It wasn’t supposed to work, but it does, and they don’t have the Slightest Clue how or why.]

There is a lot of throwback bands but some feel so spot on as to feel copy cattish of the 80's / 90's / 70's but Slightest Clue pulls inspirations but they are just that, jumping off points to their own iterational blend.

"Suit Uptight!" is the first single off their upcoming EP "Carousel!"
