Alex Nicol and the beautiful folk melancholia and serenity of "Working On My Tan" (Official Video)

"I’ve been working on my tan / On the mountain in the cold breeze / Frozen rivers, stray branches / And me running freely..."

Beautifully lying between melancholia and serenity, "Working On My Tan" by Montreal, Canada's indie folk singer-songwriter Alex Nicol, charms you with country twang guitars, languid acoustic strums, a sleep cadence with grand folk orchestrations and Nicol's endearing vocal countenance that feels like an amalgam of Neil Young and Harry Nilsson. Elevated with a filmic Official Video as directed by Jérémie Boivin, it features actor Andre Lanthier as an older chap enjoying his best life in beautiful surroundings. There is a odd sense though that things aren't right. His only companion is his cute pup and the solitude feels somber adding a heavy weight to the song.

Anytime you want
You can come alive
The attentive heart
Makes the world a mysterious place

After a while the phrase "Working On My Tan" might feel like a convenient phrase that might be used by someone who is lonely but needs to say something to people who ask how they are doing. Or maybe I am projecting. One thing is for sure, we are all getting older every second and need to cultivate our own garden, one full of love and acceptance.

However you interpret "Working On My Tan" it haunts you in moving ways. The track is from Alex's latest single from his latest album, "Been A Long Year Vol.1 & 2" dropping on December 1st, 2023. Alex says the track is about "how difficult it can be to live in the moment".
