Sonny Falls and the stoned haunt and happenings of "Cemeteries"

"cemeteries to get stoned in all the bones under our feet / the ghosts living in your sheets / made from ashes to concrete..."

"Cemeteries" by Sonny Falls, the songwriting project of Chicagoan Ryan "Hoagie" Wesley Ensley, oddly, sounds like a bedroom pop song written by a ghost (or maybe for ghosts). There is a somber sense of being stuck, between planes of existence, or maybe just life. The smart, even charming lyrics might make you smile as surprising rhymes speed by at a steady clip except when Ryan extend words, passages to punctuate the emotional context, amping up somber walls of sound and sometimes shining rays of hope.

About Sonny Fall's aesthetic / artistic lens, Liner Notes reveal (bracketed):

[Informed by years of communal living and a disdain for the traditional “Rock Band” set up, Hoagie has a prolific and collective mentality. This mindset allows space for an exciting dynamic where, harnessed by a workaholic foundation, an endless configuration of collaboration can take place with a rotating cast highlighting some of Chicago’s finest musicians. Sonny Falls' dynamic sonic spectrum, ranging from sparse acoustic sounds to noise rock, has earned Hoagie and company recognition from The Chicago Tribune, American Songwriter, Flood Magazine and Talkhouse, among others. Sonny Falls' second album, the double LP "All That Has Come Apart / Once Did Not Exist" was released in December 2020.]

Other releases have followed that you can find on Spotify and such. "Cemeteries" while beginning sort of small and bedroom pop-esque, in the end or halfway through, ends in big ways, more chamber pop-ish like a rousing late 70's pop rock song. I don't know what I feel about that but in the end I am glad having heard it and finding out about Sonny Falls, past and present, ghost or a guy beneath a ghostly sheet. The "Cemeteries" / "Dystopian Dracula" single is out now.
