Darkly dreamy and saturated in romance noir, "Calaveras" by San Francisco artist, songstress Violet Basso takes you on a mysterious trip or maybe even a death spiral. Elevated by a witchy black and white filmic Official Video that might cast long shadows like an Antonio Margheriti 60's Black & White Italian horror movie, "Calaveras" draws me in right away. I love the electric guitar shapes that, for me, possess the gritty gothic rock atmospheres of some 90's post rock and in some ways it feels like an amalgam of artists like Portishead and Radiohead (the 'head' bands is totally coincidental). I love the descending pattern at the right places and Violet's commanding vocal presence here. Her vocal shapes, artful tones, are gorgeous embracing, in many ways, a torch song aesthetic pushing against faint dissonance as you might within a jazz interpretation of a rock song, like hitting major 7th expressions against a major chord. These nuances broaden the emotional tones like viewing through a bending lens feeling trippy, psychedelic.
Other elements like the ghostly organ sound, the big bass and stoic, yet totally potent shuffling drum patterns fill out the spaces. I only wish "Calaveras" was longer so I could escape into this beautiful darkness for much longer.
