"you gave me the body I wrestle / you could give me solace after death / in the book of souls without a vessel / you could always send me back..."
The emotional tensions are present from the onset within "I Belong Here" by teddy<3, the latest solo project of songwriter / producer Teddy Geiger, a sort of glacial, crystalline atmosphere with lovely soft, yet chunky, acoustic guitar strums leading the way as teddy's voice slips in with a ghostly self harmonies making it all feel like a memory.
"You gave me the body I wrestle
You could give me solace after death
In the book of souls without a vessel
You could always send me back"
But a mere 1 minute and change, the song takes a dramatic turn, running at a full sprint with a punchy thumping kick drum, the time sig change and drones of other sounds magnifying those aforementioned tensions, hitting me (in temperament) like an amalgam of The Drums (circa 2011) and Kennyhoopla. The pivotal shift feels so beautifully guttural and will surely spike you with rushes of adrenaline.
"To remember
I belong here
To remember
I belong here
Time to let it come
Let it go
Let it come let it go"
I absolutely love the emotional and musical pivots and teddy plays with muffling, or dampening the song in spots. It is like when you wake up remembering things but a dull headache veils your thinking.
I particularly am crushing on this lyrical passage>
"I was sure I was hopelessly lost
A modicum of illusion so good I needed more
I needed more"
On "I Belong Here", as well as the album "Teresa", I feel like teddy is less concerned about creating a mass pop album than sharing her own truth in more subversive ways and thus subverting expectations altogether and I love that.
SOME TAKEAWAYS ABOUT THE NEW ALBUM (via press notes- bracketed)
[...details on her upcoming new record, Teresa. Today, it's finally revealed in its entirety on all DSPs via STEM.
As Geiger described of the record's origins: "I was fortunate to be able to take a three month trip to Madrid in 2019 to reflect and get out of LA and live fresh. All the songs on Teresa came out of that period of self discovery."
Thus, Teresa — introduced with singles "True Love," "Never Enough," "In Spades," and "I've Made Mistakes" — finds Geiger writing from a truly vulnerable and intimate place, purging her heart and soul as a means of healing and spiritual cleansing. With themes of identity, human connection, self-compassion, and love, it's an album littered with moments of reflection, and also revelation. It's a celebration of herself, and of the journey it took for her to get to where she is today.
Geiger goes into further detail on the record via a brand new Atwood Magazine piece, published today. Speaking on the record's title, she wrote: "One night on the street, our group had a little impromptu mixer with another group we were passing. One of the girls thought my name was Tere, and started calling me Teresa and it just stuck with me. I started writing it a lot on fogged windows, etc. through this time of feminine self-discovery and exploration. With my last album, Lillyanna, she was a very repressed angry, dark angel. Teresa kind of glows for me and feels like a lantern on a warm foggy night in a dream forest."
Geiger additionally accompanies her new record's release today with a new animated visual for focus track, "I Belong Here."
On the track and its new visual, she continued:
"This was actually the first song I worked on for the album. I had rented a 1 bedroom apt in MalasaƱa in Madrid, to spend some time in the creative process. I tend to lean introvert, and I’ve always spent a lot of time working and processing alone and wanted to reconnect to that. The song is about learning to accept exactly where I am at. It has lots of themes of reincarnation, re-establishing a sense of faith, from illusion to clarity."
It was also so special to work with Sabrina Nichols on the animated video for this song. She had strong sense of song and album and really brought that spirit to life."
The full-length "Teresa" LP is out now via STEM. Stay tuned for more from teddy<3, coming soon.]
