The Lylacs and the dark melancholy romance of "Visions of You" featuring Francis Blume

"it's here again / over me like desert rain..."

The sunset romance of "Visions of You" by California's The Lylacs (songwriter/guitarist Justin Eddy and producer/bassist Jon Joseph) takes it's time before getting to the vocals. It is almost a full minute before Francis Blume drops evocative lyrics in but those 48 seconds are used so well building on darkly dreamy keys and dramatic orchestral touches that have a sense of mystery and sadness. Blume's vocal countenance cut with Eddy's songwriting and Joseph's beautiful production work feels, to me, like  a sort of throwback to the pop classicalism of the late 60's and 70's. I can't help but think of iconic American songwriter Jimmy Webb who, back in the day, wasn't afraid to dip his lyric into abstract colors when recalling the esoteric loss of intimate personal connections (Macarthur Park, All I Know).

When I go to sleep I don't know what will play in my replay in my head more, the dark melancholy synth lines or Francis Blume's western pop noir vox. Either way, I will likely have some cinematic dreams once I am lulled to sleep.

The Lylacs are southern California's answer to the current era of disposable pop music, crafting lush, haunting songs that combine dreamy atmospherics with classic melodicism. Their debut EP, "A New Age" (2020), and follow up single "Bliss" (2021), were a collaboration between songwriter/guitarist Justin Eddy, producer/bassist Jon Joseph, and vocalist Emily Campbell. "Heaven", "Lovers/Friends", and "Fragments of Lost Days", a series of collaborations with Francis Blume, were released on November 11th, 2022, January 20th, 2023, and September 1st, 2023. Their new single, "Visions of You", is streaming now.
