"a cellist that combines elements of classical cello, r&b, hip-hop, folk and neo-soul"
The fluttering tensions of "country mouse" by Denver, Colorado songwriter, cellist Alex Brinkman don't feel like a slow burn but, from the onset, a house on fire. The tactile string plucks, like offset frameworks held together by deep drones of sound resembling sleeping giants, serves as a dark tumultuous sky for Brinkman's cello melodies. Often the voicings begin in high registers and stair step down. In terms of a soundtrack to a film, there is both drama and mystery and maybe even horror around the edges. I couldn't help but think of the kinds of sharp obtuse edges of sound that might adorn a Paul Thomas Anderson movie staring someone as unsettling as a Daniel Day-Lewis (of course).
Dramatic stuff. Brinkman's "country mouse" is a daring art piece, vast but sharply subtle as well and avoiding traps. A lot going on but none of the emotional takes trip over each other.
