"Icing is white all on my face / Drinking in the space / Red is on the door / Green is spread out on this place..."
The subversive funk bomb "Penetrate" by Miami's (by way of New York) avant punk outfit Donzii is as sticky as flypaper and alternatively dense. With an absolutely radical bass line that floats somewhere between Tina Weymouth and Flea (courtesy of mutli-instrumentalist Dennis Fuller), shotgun handclaps, a percussive pocketed drum beat, wonky synth lines floating in a horror pop way and Jenna Balfe's proto punkian pouty vocals spouting curiously sideways lyrics, both sultry and darkly dreamy, and you have a lot on your plate to enjoy. ON top of that add a messily performed raucous Official Video as directed by Trulee Hall for desert.
From Liner Notes:
[Named after an Italian speedboat company—corrupted with an extra i—Miami's Donzii was started by vocalist Jenna Balfe and musician Dennis Fuller. Their post-punk vision is a unity of go-hard industrial bangers, darkly ambient balladry, and new takes on the funk traditions of No Wave.]

Donzii shares:
"Penetrate is simultaneously funky and dark, referencing many of our influences at once. As we were crafting the song, we wanted to write something with a chord progression we had never heard before to ensure its originality and perk our ears. The video is an extension of Trulee Hall’s amazing body of work that we feel flows into our aesthetic - chaotic energy that isn’t afraid to poke fun at the hyper-sexual and male dominated world we live in. 'The Penetrate' EP is a concise package of new material ("Rollercoaster") and 2 remixes by good friends Brutus VIII (nyc) and Mr. TwinSister (nyc) and previously unreleased recordings that focus on our No Wave roots (John Wayne & Lizzy)."
I am gleefully loving this track.
Red is on the door
Green is spread out on this place
Growing onto lace
Talking to my soul
Facing toward the orange sun
Want to have some fun
Big clock ticking down
Finding how to play some danger
Riding with a stranger
Like you can't go home
Ice cream like you want to taste me
Then you penetrate me
Then you want some more
Hold me like you want to know me
And you want to show me that you want some more
Ice cream like you want to taste me
Then you penetrate me
Then you want some more
Hold me like you want to know me
And you want to show me that you want some more
Green is spread out on this place
Growing onto lace
Talking to my soul
Facing toward the orange sun
Want to have some fun
Big clock ticking down
Finding how to play some danger
Riding with a stranger

Ice cream like you want to taste me

Hold me like you want to know me
And you want to show me that you want some more
Ice cream like you want to taste me
Then you penetrate me
Then you want some more
Hold me like you want to know me
And you want to show me that you want some more

Formed in 2015 during jam sessions at a dilapidated suburban mansion from the ’70s, the Donzii galaxy has included a number of supporting musicians over the years, helping to form their poly-blend of electronics, bass guitar, ‘80s utopian guitar and vocalist Balfe’s hauntingly spirited vocals.
Balfe’s poetic lyrics spill from many inner dimensions and intentions: “A lot of my inspiration comes from wanting people to think more deeply about being able to exist in a way that is more joyful,” she says. “Not in a Live Love Laugh kinda way, but in a way that encompasses the material grossness of this chaotic life cycle with a little chuckle beneath your breath. Like watching sweet little pink flowers grow atop a pile of decaying bones and compost.”
Inspired by the full range of feelings on planet Earth, from the darkest corners to the sunniest days, Balfe and Fuller are allergic to trends but resolutely of the moment. Donzii is a therapeutic exercise in sincere and honest expression, a confrontation with demons, a celebration of getting lost. In many ways Donzii is not a normal band. But, as Balfe says, there is one rule of all great music that they follow: “We do it so people can dance.”
