dools and the melancholy heaviness of "rooftop"

"the lights were bright / the time was right..."

The melancholy heaviness of "rooftop" by relative New Jersey based newcomer dools is a, quite frankly, wonderful debut. I don't know that much about dools (at all) except that I am digging his guitar sensibilities both in terms of his rhythms, lead playing and guitar sound. While he references the Strokes and Tame Impala as artists he likes I am feeling other touchstones. Maybe it is a function of my age or having a different artistic bent but "rooftop" had me thinking firstly of artists like Interpol, Pixies, The Bravery and tangentially The Strokes and faintly, temperamentally a hint of The Smiths.

What I like the most here is the brooding emotional thrust, without a lot of words you get a picture of feeling alone, of inner turmoil, the kind of boiling over of angst that might have you running away or turning inward. Those times when you need to be either by yourself or get lost in a crowd or heavy dinge of heavy music, in a mosh pit or elsewhere.

This introduction, the mystery of dools is a nice one thus far.
