"To observe with clarity it seems you lie and swerve / Kept ties forming lines you air / Observing nothing much..."
"Name Dropper" by indie-psych quartet from St Petersburg, Florida Liquid Pennies starts off with a grunge dipped jangle pop prog but it is just a deceptive come on. Before you know it all hell breaks loose with massively drawn psych rock bordering on doom metal and it is good, it is fucking good. There is something about screaming guitar shapes and bottom heavy bass lines curdling around slamming drums (provided by two drummers might I add) that feels so transportive especially when you turn it up. It is the kind of sound that you want to hear live. The only band I have seen multiple times that have consistently used two drummers is the OSEES and it is, for whatever reason, utterly compelling. After an East Coast tour in February of 2023, the band brought on dual drummers Pierson Whicker and Casey Jones. "Name Dropper" is the first official release with Whicker and Jones.
Here Liquid Pennies use the double drumming to great effect and the deeply textured heavy sound born out of psych rock, post punk, doom, hardcore with jazz fused dips (and more) have me feeling a heady amalgam of artists like The Jesus Lizard, Girl Band, METZ.
Folding on
You keep holding on
You mean to try, but those eyes sell out the guise
It stands, fraying plans to share won't match the stare aware
Of the silence that grows
All that you chose not to hear feigning frames before it all was through
Maybe you used, maybe they knew
Maybe these falsities have become fused
You keep holding on
You mean to try, but those eyes sell out the guise
It stands, fraying plans to share won't match the stare aware
Of the silence that grows
All that you chose not to hear feigning frames before it all was through
Maybe you used, maybe they knew
Maybe these falsities have become fused

Liquid Pennies are an indie-psych quartet from St Petersburg, Florida formed in 2018. Pulling from psychedelia, post-punk, indie rock, hardcore, doom, jazz, and a myriad of other genres, the band seeks to find the concise in the abstract and keep listeners on their tapping toes. Floods, the band’s 2019 debut album, was self-produced utilizing a blend of analog tape and digital mediums. Adding fourth member Zoë Turtle on violin and vocals the following year, "Secrets Dash" was written, recorded, mixed, and released independently in June 2020. March of 2021 saw the release of the sophomore full-length Distant Dawn, tracked and mixed during the 2nd half of 2020 with Nathan Doyle of Voyager Recordings. In 2022 they released the raw and upfront analog recorded D.E. ep., followed by Any Wonder; an hour-long journey featuring a myriad of guest musicians that serves as a testament to the band’s growth and progression gleaned from abject inspirations. January 2023's A Wake-Ending explored intricacies between the lines with a stripped-down yet technical approach the band honed in their live performances.
