Rafael Xavier and the wonderful folk / fado interactions of "Orion, Guide Me" (Official Video)

"Orion, guide me / Through the thousand miles away / Orion, guide me / Through the haze of routine's trail..."

The Official Video for the "Orion, Guide Me" by Rafael Xavier is a filmic journey that may or may not show shades of debauchery, of men of power being corrupted by money and the promise of much more, control, darkness overcoming light but the hope that one or many may see the light in the end. The song, sung mostly in Portuguese except for the chorus in English feels rustic, classic, with an evocative vocal performance tells a story full of social / political commentary with artful passion. The musical sway might feel familiar in different parts of the world, a communal gypsy dance that feels hopeful and somber at the same time. Xavier with violinist Eduardo Sousa have crafted a magnetic sonic journey, iterations of modern folk blended with Fado, a music genre which can be traced to the 1820s in Lisbon, Portugal.

From Liner Notes:

Loosely translated:

["Close your eyes and you are in Heaven. Open your eyes and you are in Hell." It is in this limbo that "Orion, Guide Me" appears, a scathing social critique that contemplates the seven deadly sins in an allegory between Good and Evil: a passage from the candid, the light and the beautiful to a timeless city decadence. The lyrics, which are heard in a fusion between the melancholy of fado in the voice and guitar of author Rafael Xavier and the folk and modern influence invoked by violinist and composer Eduardo Sousa, explore nostalgia and the loss of innocence, the hustle and bustle of routine and the search for spiritual purification. The dense, dark and mysterious environment created by Rafael Xavier and captured through the lens of an artist, is an intriguing satire that is not unrelated to a critique of bribery, vice, clerical hypocrisy, corrupt politics and social indifference, and culminates in a sublime act of redemption.]

Orion, guide me
Through the thousand miles away
Orion, guide me
Through the haze of routine's trail
Orion, guide me
Through the thousand nights awake
Orion, guide me
Through the sorrow that prevails

If you are like me, you will take this journey more than once, enjoy.

Portugese
