"got you two tickets to my show / will you show up / Oh, I don't know..."
The lovely bittersweet warbling groove of "Espresso Martini" by Subway Rat, the alt indie rock, avant punk fused project of Queens, New York's David Polanco might have you imagining hitting the clubs in the East Village in the 80's. This "experimental alternative hip hop track" digs deep and amps up the fun and I thought of an amalgam of old school sounds, maybe Digital Underground's (The Humpty Dance) slap with a Tom Tom Club urban East Coast funk punk vibe stoked up by the broadly wide eyed mania of a Pere Ubu (Dave Thomas) or thereabouts.
Polanco shares this:
"A fun street vibe with a booming bass. Some Talking Heads energy, telling a classic rock n roll love story over jangly bright guitars. Awesome instrumental by my guitarist and producer Paco Lee."
This bit of cool brilliance is from Subway Rat’s debut album "Stand Clear Of The Closing Doors" that dropped just last year!

Born David Polanco on November 19, 1993, Subway Rat is an indie rocker from the borough of Queens, New York City. A few months after a rough, prolonged breakup with his college sweetheart and a life altering late diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder Level 1, he wrote his first-ever song. It’s called Rendezvous. With no prior musical experience, Subway Rat has written dozens of songs since then in collaboration with indie guitarist and producer Paco Lee, along with multi-platinum, Grammy-winning engineers at Lounge Studios in Times Square. Fans describe his raspy voice, aggressive delivery, romantic storytelling, and energizing rock beats as an exciting mix of fellow NYC legends such as The Strokes, The Velvet Underground, Talking Heads, 50 Cent, and Pop Smoke.
Following the success of his debut album, which surpassed 1 million streams, Subway Rat's new singles Outta Town, Hope, and Moon have amassed hundreds of thousands of streams, generating excitement among fans. Building on his raw, emotive songwriting, the album showcases Subway Rat's growth with poetic storytelling and advanced studio techniques. Recorded at Lounge Studios and released under his own label Rat Tooth Records, Captain of the Football Team is a breakup power pop anthem with an NYC alternative twist, blending hi-fi production with underground lo-fi vocals. The album is projected to make a strong debut, fueled by Subway Rat's unique pop, rock, hip hop fusion sound and passionate following around the world, especially in Brooklyn, Latin America and the UK.
