"so I'll scream and kick / and lose our fear again..."
The darkness and enchantment of "Borders" by Williamsburg, Virginia-based indie folk singer/songwriter Ethan Lease (in collaboration with producer Jonah Benjamin Charles Lavender), hinges on extremely intimate instrumentations and vocals adorned with the ambiance of nature. From the album "For The Person I Remember You To Be", an album written and recorded entirely outdoors, there is a sense of bare feet on the ground, of sunlight or the sting of cold influencing what was committed to the recording. Ethan's vocal countenance embraced with what I interpret as an inner and outer voice, embraced with self harmonies, steadied with a warble or sonic artistry that sometimes feels in between singing and non-lexical singing spun on a loom with emotional contexts and the breathe and scope of an organ singing along with the birds in the background.
The outdoorsy approach and what might be an immediacy to it all makes the sounds feel organic whether improvisational or not and this appeals to me.

"Since October 2022, he has poured his creative energy into crafting his first album. Notably, each composition in this collection reveals subtle yet deliberate background noises, ranging from snippets of conversations to the faint hum of passing vehicles. These ambient elements serve as intentional reminders, encouraging listeners to be fully present and attuned to the world surrounding them. By inviting audiences to immerse themselves in the album's soundscape, Ethan Lease's music beckons individuals to appreciate the rich tapestry of their immediate environment and embrace the beauty of the here and now."
