Grackles and the stunning romance and reminder of "Top Of The World"

"laying low / I'm gonna take it slow / feel the after glow..."

Lay down in the lush, twangy, romance bed of "Top Of The World" by Austin based band Grackles, with the amazing assistance of guest singer Kat Edmonson, and the timeless mixed drink is easy to swallow and, quite frankly, get wonderfully drunk over. The sultry duet, a mix of country, blues, rock, pop noir that sits comfortably / beautifully somewhere between the 50's honky tonk / pop dance of Red Foley and Kitty Wells and the 70's folk country embrace of Linda Ronstadt and JD Souther, reminds you of how stunningly adorable this kind of time traveling interplay can be and how two distinct voices can commiserate, can flirt, cajole making us all swoon.

On the song the band’s Noah Lit says:

"Top of the World was a beautiful chord structure Jason (Mozersky) had, that we all sat and strummed together on acoustic guitars live in the studio with upright bass and brushes on the drums. It instantly felt so warm and welcoming. I knew I wanted to sing it way lower than normal, so got Kat Edmonson to sing the melody with me. Sort of a Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra vibe. Lyrically it's pretty straight forward. It's such a short, honest piece, I really tried hard not to let the words get in the way. I'm happily married and with a beautiful daughter and find my own life to be pretty damn great. Meanwhile the world around me crumbles. We bounce from one shit storm to the next, and try desperately to keep it together."

"Top Of The World", an instant classic from Grackles self-titled album will be released on vinyl and through all major streaming services on February 24.

From LINER NOTES:

[The music leans heavily into Noah and Jason’s many years in Austin. Dark blues rhumba with country ballads. Singer songwriter aesthetics meet blazing guitar solos and danceable 12 bar tunes. Hammond B3 drives the vintage guitars, and Beatles-esque 12 string Rickenbackers, while string sections sweep above in Roy Orbison arrangements. Noah leans into a deeper, lower register croon and growl. Part Leonard Coen, part snarling dog, the lyrics flow like shoal creek over limestone. Guest vocals by Kat Edmonson and Lauren Harris, add ethereal chords, and full throated whimsy.]

[The live band is an eight piece country, rock, blues explosion. Their sold out first show at the iconic Antone’s, downtown Austin brought echoes of old Austin into a new updated package. Like a classic car with a Tesla Engine, Grackles is all that was Austin, through a thoroughly modern lens.]

Grackles' sound / aesthetic, the time traveling of it all. The complex beauty can somehow restore my faith in humanity and beauty even when the world is so decidedly ugly. It is a reminder. I look forward to the album.

In October of ‘22, in Arlyn Studio, Austin, Texas a recording session became a band. Drummer Jimmy Paxson was finishing a leg of his world tour with The Chicks at Austin City Limits Festival. Jimmy was in contact with Jason Mozersky, his Grammy award winning guitar player and bandmate from Ben Harper. Jason discussed with Kyle Crusham, producer for Paul Simon and Edie Brickell, getting together to do some recording and lastly songwriter and indie rock musician Noah Lit (Oliver Future, Noah and the MegaFauna) was added to the mix. With the band in place, they looked to Noah, now a restaurateur in Austin, and way, way out of the music business, to write some tunes. “The band was ready to rock, and they looked at me and said, ok Noah, go write some songs” explains Noah. Never one to back away from a challenge, Noah dug deep into his musical former self, woodshedded, and pulled 13 songs out of the ether that became Grackles. The band’s self-titled debut album will be released on vinyl and through all major streaming services on February 24, 2024. First single, “San Antone,” will be released on all streaming services 11/16/23.
