Kid Tigrrr and the trip inducing magnetic gaze of "Shapes of Water"

"I take your words and hear them / Bright Water... bring us back to Life / I drink the Son, I drink the sky / Water, bring us back to life..."

The trip inducing magnetic gaze of "Shapes of Water" by Kid Tigrrr, [the new solo project of singer-songwriter Jenna Fournier, a painter/visual artist best known for fronting NIIGHTS, a shoegaze hybrid formed in 2010], feels like a meditation, a trance state or nightly affirmation before you enter the dream state. In that mode, Fournier even keeps the lyrical poetry short, a melodic mantra of sorts transmitted in whispers, hushed self reflections. The track is easy to lower yourself into, a languid bath of delicate acoustic guitar lines that flow into electric picking dancing with lead work as rhythms with bending notes punctuating off percussion and drum beats that feel as tribal as they do post rockian. The wash of sounds whether pedal effected guitar or synths or both while hazey form a sonic fabric, a tapestry that you can still feel, identify if you lean in. I love this because sometimes shoe gaze music blends so heavily that the individual components are obscured too much. That is not happening here.

LINER NOTES about "Shapes of Water":

[The song began as an official demo for EarthQuaker Devices' Aqueduct pedal, and from there grew into a live-looping set favorite. It was later recorded live for Dreamgaze, a world-wide music festival presented by DKFM Shoegaze Radio. Fournier then went on to produce the song at home, adding layers of electronics into the sound-scape, then finally finishing it in-studio with live drums.]

"Shapes of Water" feels in a way like a sonic drug that opens up other parts of your brain and your heart too. I could play this in repeat for extended periods and it's soothing nature would feel somehow healing. I also think it would work exquisitely well gracing a film or the next Netflix or Hulu binger. I hope that happens, it would be well suited for film.

More LINER NOTES:

[KID TIGRRR is the new solo project of singer-songwriter Jenna Fournier, a painter/visual artist best known for fronting NIIGHTS, a shoegaze hybrid formed in 2010. Following three studio releases and four international tours to Japan with her band, Fournier parted ways with her record label of five years and ventured into audio engineering to experiment with home music production in 2020. Her debut LP, "Stoned and Animald", is three years in the making, being self-produced at home, then finished in-studio. The result is an ethereal blend of art-rock, indie folk, and dream-pop, painting lush atmospheres around intimate songwriting. The work tackles subjects such as abuse, addiction, and mental health struggles in an effort to challenge stigmas. ]
