Lanes and the complex utter beauty of "Things Will Be Done Before You Come" (あなたがここに来るまでに用は済みそう)

"あなたがここに来るまでに用は済みそう"

The densely dreamy "Things Will Be Done Before You Come" (あなたがここに来るまでに用は済みそう) by Lanes, the project name of Yokohama, Japan's music producer / recording engineer Yuji Tamura, is like a deliciously ripe piece of sonic fruit, tart yet sweet and saturated with so much to consume, to enjoy. Dripping by pearly falling guitar notes and lovely bass lines that bounces around the drum beat with an air of sultriness and elegance, the song featuring Tamura's gentle vocal countenance (in Japanese) followed, mirrored, at times by that aforementioned bass line is as beautiful as it feels reserved. This is the thing though, it s not really researved at all, it the guitar (for example) jams but does so in service of the song, the cascading synths rain down like snow fall and the interconnections of sound all feels so beautiful. There are moments of abstractions too, pushes into dissonance (barely) but all done with a subtle, deft hand.

I love what is happening here. It feels like a soundtrack to a complex Netflix binger, one full of complex emotions and mysteries.

LINER NOTES:

"Things Will Be Done Before You Come" draws influence both from the synth sound of Broadcast, evocative of primitive electronic music, and the complex song arrangements of Brazilian composer Arthur Verocai. The new single enables you to get a glimpse of Tamura's love of the entwining guitar sound of WomenTelevision, and even as far as the latter's frontman, Tom Verlaine; and yet, beyond that, one can observe the simple-yet-catchy melody of the La's, as well as the deep, psychedelic chorus of Curt Boettcher's works.

In the years he spent away from the spotlight, Tamura has recorded and produced various underground forward-thinking bands from Tokyo, such as alternative band Mizuirazu, slowcore band Pause, scum-psych improvisation band John Tremendous' Soft Adult Explosion, and experimental band Pot-pourri. "Things Will Be Done Before You Come" is where Tamura incorporates all of these musical experiences and showcases his new sound, one that will carry him to the next frontier of his artistic evolution.

Started as a solo project by Yuji Tamura, a music producer, and recording engineer from Yokohama, Japan, Lanes released only one EP titled “Actor” before spending years away from the spotlight to record and produce various underground forward-thinking bands from Tokyo, such as the alternative band Mizuirazu, slowcore band Pause, and scum-psych improvisation band John Tremendous' Soft Adult Explosion. Tamura's songs feature psychedelic, catchy melodies, and hypnotic vocals inspired by the Paisley Underground and ’60s jangle pop. He also draws influences from the entwining guitar sounds of Women and Television, as well as the deep, euphoric chorus of Curt Boettcher’s works.
