Mol Sullivan and the time bending beautiful abstractions of "Goose" (Official Video)

"Oh, I don’t know, honestly / How this is supposed to go- / To keep the devil in me / From her big top, one-man show..."

The zoetropic beauty and fasciation of "Goose", the title track of folk singer-songwriter, artful adventurer Mol Sullivan's latest album draws you into it's time bending storytelling. I say time bending because Mol's musical and vocal shapes here encompass a surreal sense, sifting elements of 60's folk, 19th century folk, modern revival blends of 90's baroque pop into some other kind of folk / chamber pop iterations as invented by Mol Sullivan that feels so very cinematic and could literally grace a movie like 'Poor Things' or 'Persepolis' or 'Lady Bird' or 'White Noise' and more.

"Goose" percolates with tensions between stunning curious poetry and even if I may not truly grasp the meaning of her words, I feel the abstractions, the subversions, the whimsy and maybe even hints of despair and horror in the ascensions of melancholia. Mol's twisting elegance pushes against normal conventions and I thought of Vashti Bunyan, Marianne Faithfull, Skullcrusher, 1948's Lavender Blue by Dinah Shore and Radiohead (circa 2016) kind of all at once.

"A little slip, a little kiss
A little tumble, and a dive-
Head first into a tidal pool
much too shallow to survive
Babble on the babbling brook
Get lifted up by black balloons
Am I the swan or just a goose?
I’d bet the latter, grab my purse
It’s not so difficult a choice
Between a joker and a fool
Without giving them a voice
Do you want the ocean or a pool?"

Insanely creative, insanely. I have no more words, just a smile.

Over the past decade, this Cincinnati based musician has been charming audiences with songwriting that speaks earnestly and with grit. Intricate lyrics and dynamic vocals, chaperoned by delicate pop melodies, suspend the listener between the ethereal and concrete.

Her performances, recorded or live, vibrate with sincerity, driven by emotional deliveries.

Sullivan has spent the last few years sober. She has used this time as a poignant backdrop for reflecting over an emotionally chequered past and reconciling being the forlorn villain of her own story.
