Late Cambrian and the power pop, progressive rock joy of "Cave My Head Full of Dreams" (Official Lyric Video)

"Murder these / Thoughts that keep me up tonight / My Back ain’t free / A Chiropractic alibi / For shattered dreams / That blow away like leaves..."

The art rock / Brit pop / progressive rock collisions of "Cave My Head Full of Dreams" by Late Cambrian, the Brooklyn-based future-pop/indie-rock core duo of John Wlaysewski (vocals, guitar) and Olive Hui (vocals) - along with Matthew Milligan (bass), Eric Zeender (guitar) and Ben Weiss (drums) [plus a guest guitar outro by musician, writer and comedian Dave Hill - truly, go figure], is from the onset a multi-colored musical ride, a psychedelic unabashedly pop celebration, a carnival parade for all ages.

The dense harmonies, the glam rock guitar tones, the striking Beatles-esque sharp downbeats and T-Rex-ian / Sweet double leads tube sounds and more made me flash on (for the most part) a particular urgent amalgam of late 70's, early 80's proggy power pop rock fab four influenced bands like Squeeze, XTC, Aztec Camera, Split Enz, Tears for Fears or thereabouts. Absolutely love the sound, the artistic attitudes presented and the over-riding sense of joy. Dig this, oh, and is it me or does the lyric, "Surfin’ round / I read the news today oh well / And what I found / 4 thousand holes in how I tell / The same old tale, this tea is / Getting stale..." feel like a direct nod to The Beatles' "A Day in The Life"?

What a trip Late Cambrian has given us.

LINER NOTES:

Late Cambrian first formed over a decade ago after Wlaysewski and Hui met while working on set on an episode of Nurse Jackie. Almost immediately, the duo started writing and releasing music together, and released four LPs over the course of seven years. Now, with Future Snacks, Late Cambrian have built on the legacy that they have created, often taking inspiration from their own past works to inspire themselves in the present.

On their new album Future Snacks (Sept 2022), John Wlaysewski and Olive Hui—the creative and romantic partnership behind the Brooklyn-based future-pop/indie-rock duo Late Cambrian—have crafted a work of art that explores the many facets of modern social consciousness while still giving listeners a reason to dance. From the fear of impending technocracy and corporate-sponsored nostalgia to the uncertainty of the future and long-term emotional effects of the pandemic, Future Snacks is a record that is concerned with ideas and questions, with the acceptance that answers may be hard to find.

Late Cambrian is releasing two brand new songs on February 16, 2024. Cave My Head Full of Dreams has a guest guitar outdo by Musician, writer and comedian Dave Hill. Late Bloomer has a guitar solo performed by Wheatus frontman Brendan Brown.

"Cave My Head Full of Dreams" Official Lyric Video is a f*cking partially AI generated trip. Enjoy.
