Aunt Philis Disco Dream and the slightly twisted tenderness of "Genie" (& Portals)

"you said don't leave me / I will leave you / believe me, I am glued to you / and all you said I will do / for you..."

The deathly dreamy, suspiciously intended, tenderly drawn "Genie" by Salt Lake City, Utah based duo Aunt Philis Disco Dream, is mind bendingly magnetic. The 50's doo wop syrup is sweet but with the upfront canned mic'd vocals the track steps right up to David Lynch's front door without crossing the threshold (or maybe steps over it) and I love that about this track. You could in fact, in you Twin Peaks head space, imagine The Arm dancing to "Genie" in a red shaded room. Do I wish "Genie" was longer, yeah. Do I wish that a full ghostly orchestra drops in at the end, maybe.

In the end and the more I listen, the obtuse side of this song goes away and it is just feels sweet and sweetly corny in such a great way.

By the way, "Genie" lead me to Aunt Philis Disco Dream's 2023 Album "Portals", a diverse bit of psych rock, beach goth, indie rock, 70's-esque garden rock all done up in what I would describe as the duo's blend of lo-fi retro-ism, artful (figurative or not) drunken swagger and askew take on things. I love what they are doing and have included a taste. The wonderful "Bounce House" that sort of feels like Harry Nilsson and John Lennon fucking around with great effect.

I dig every song on "Portals" from top to bottom and it is an album listen. It works as an album listen. Check it out. A trip worth taking and when you get to the psychedelic jam of "Portals (realms 1-9)" you will be artfully spent and will want to share this album with your friends.
