Buddy Junior and the sonic heaviness / emotional artfulness of "2 CENTS"

"i don't need your 2 cents / if i had a dollar for every good thing you said to me / i would have no money cuz your talk is cheap..."

Sometimes it is easy to describe why I am enthralled with a song and sometimes not so easy. The hazy complexities of "2 CENTS" by San Francisco indie noise pop outfit Buddy Junior falls into the later category. I mean, on the surface, it might simply fall into the post punk shoegaze umbrella term but just saying that doesn't do it justice by a mile. From the onset, the attitude, the artful constructions and directions surprise me. I love the heaviness, guitars and vocals bloodletting smashed together with pretty guitar percolations that give it a kind of 90's post punk meets goth pop. Over the many times I have replayed "2 CENTS" I thought sonically of an amalgam of iconic artists like Twin Tribes, The Cure and The Cranberries. I know that may sound odd and I might be pulling just glimmers of sound like sound splinters in my skin, it is the way my mind works having listened to so much music for so long.

But enough about my frazzled mind, Buddy Junior's sound is obviously a distillation of a lot of art they have absorbed over time. I appreciate the subversive nature and the emotional edges that they hone within their song's lyrics.

i don't need your 2 cents

if i had a dollar for every good thing you said to me

i would have no money cuz your talk is cheap

so you can drag your little feet across the floor

cuz i ain't take this shit anymore

i can't remember the last time i couldn't hear your voice
