Gregory Ackerman and the gentle melancholy persuasions of "Breaking My Heart"

"I woke up dreaming I was in between the color schemes of your eyes and your mind..."

Starting with acoustic guitar shapes that reveal the songs vocal melody that made me think fondly of Elliot Smith, the easily endearing "Breaking My Heart" by L.A. based singer songwriter Gregory Ackerman quickly sweeps you off your feet. It might be Ackerman's vocal countenance that faintly smiles at you while holding both sharp bits of melancholia and a self aware warmth (like giving a hug to someone who needs it) or it might be the magnetism of the sonic structure and production that eschews the pop tropes of the day to just be totally be itself that draws you in.

This first single, first taste of Ackerman's EP "Brand New Life", dropping in May, is all those things and more. In terms of folk and indie rock (even pop) we all need less pomp and circumstance and more honest reflections unafraid to trade whispers for screams and gentle persuasion instead of bombastic downbeats.

Dig this track and Gregory Ackerman's aesthetic.
