"you brush your teeth / you fold your sheets / you eat something healthy / it will stay like this now / job from Monday to Friday / you cherish weekends now / and brunch sounds nice..."
After an AI voice robotically lays out a general itinerary for one's robotic lifeless life, the darkly dreamy and (maybe sinisterly glitchy) "damn you! grown up world" (Official Video) by Wien, Austria's le_ mol unfolds as a soundtrack that might make a movie in your head. For now I will divorce myself from the trippy video that allows you to follow it's own narrative and I will let the shape shifting sonics push my emotions around.
The overall feeling is dark, maybe even oppressive with those aforementioned glitchy ratcheting synths, abstract guitar picking, what feels like machine beats or organic / synth drums over what might be described as gothic piano. If you do feel a movie appearing in your head it might take place in an alternate universe, or in an orbiting gargantuan ship in space. Once the giant walls crush down as either dramatic dirty distorted synths or guitars (not sure which), the song feels somewhere between post rock and industrial punk or even heavy metal. Maybe, more to the point, an iteration borrowing from all three genres.
As I often do when listening to new music I flash on other artists as attitudinal touchstones and for some reason I thought of a collaboration of Mike Patton and Thom Yorke. That might feel weird but it makes perfect sense to me.
I will have to delve into more from this loop orchestra from Vienna.
LINER NOTES:
J_LLY G__D _iME_ is the fifth LP by Austrian post-rock duo and loop orkestra le_mol.
Composed of the last two EPs J_LLY & G__D“ and yet plenty of new material the LP culmination marks a worthy end point to this release cycle.
[As kids of the 90s and the wealth, peace and MTV that comes with that decade „J_LLY G__D _iME_“ is le_mol’s reflection on being thirtysomethings in a world where the European stability of yesterday seems to disintegrate with every passing week and existential crisis lurks around every corner. Sounds like a bit too much? Thankfully, the band thinks so itself and can’t stop themselves from a smidge of mirth and irony throughout the album.]

Musically, le_mol feature some truly catchy lead vocals by legendary Hans Platzgumer (‚prds recomposition‘) and embark on more electronic avenues (‚Fun With Teeth', 'Me? Lol‘) while maintaining the trademark melancholy loop-based instrumental rock sound (‚Damn You! Grown Up World‘, ‚Welcome To The Bubble‘) they are known for.
Artistically, via a juxtaposition of odd song titles and nostalgic-analogue photographs from Vienna’s funpark „Wurstelprater“ with the thoughtful post-rock music they are known for, le_mol try to express their perception of the zeitgeist.

All of this without any real lyrics other than a feeble AI bot that can’t even properly speak English?
Yes, that’s what instrumental music does to your head. Luckily. Welcome to the ride!
