The Blanket Forts and the cold liquid folk memories of "Hold On, Lucky Boy!! 二零二四年三月十七號"

"upside down x 4 / I drink my last cup that day / and hope that your memory would fade..."

The broken upside down memories of "Hold On, Lucky Boy!! 二零二四年三月十七號" by The Blanket Forts, the moniker of Worcester, Massachusetts' singer songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Conor MacGinnis, as the title track from the upcoming album of the same name (due to drop this December), feels beautifully wistful. There are ambient elements that pull you into this sonic movie opening, maybe a vintage train arriving and later maybe a fishing boat on a cold morning seaside bay. The track pulls you in and MacGinnis' vocal aesthetic, somber and reflective has a conversational tone within something curious or maybe surreal. I did wonder if he is talking to ghosts. There is a glacial sense and because of the brevity it feels like a mere opening to a much bigger story. I was disappointed the first time I heard the track because it ends so quickly and I wanted to hear more. Leave them wanting more as they say.
