JR Wicker and the indie rock slap and tickle of "World in Me"

"a pile of pillows / blankets and sheets / teepee of covers / castle of dreams / ocean of colors / turbulent, deep / where you discover your  / wide as the sea..."

The Americana folk indie rock tropicalia of "World in Me" by Atlanta, Georgia's JR Wicker is an artful cup runneth over. Bathed in country jangle popisms and a urgent busker punk energy, Wicker throttles every word, many clever, some curious and surreal and all existential in an inspired, wide eyed wonder. I love his vocal aesthetic. He has a troubadour quality, he casts his varied vocal drawl assuredly without trepidation. Their is nothing aloof here, a free spirited attitude as if Wicker realizes that time is fleeting, "time is our enemy it seems / translucent being / God with a knife" is beautifully poetic.

Wicker about this track:

"We have this rich creative inner life and in some ways a very limited two-dimensional outer life."

I remember when I first heard "World in Me" and how moved I was about the exuberance, the "la la la la's" in the background, the whistling melodies, the driving drum slaps. I felt (at the time) a kind of Modest Mouse and Talking Heads (David Byrne's westerny side) amalgam and that still makes sense but I feel even more sonic reflections that are only JR Wicker and what he brings to the communal table sharing a warm delicious piece of Dutch apple pie and a cup of hearty coffee.

"World in Me is from JR Wicker's debut album "Weird Magic" out now.
